We spoke with Dana about his journey:

WP: You stated that you earned the degree from the Atlantic Coast Seminary in Daytona Beach, FL. You are a resident of Washington State. Can you explain?

Dana: Atlantic Coast Seminary is an online school. I actually began my studies at Trinity College in Indiana, another online program. I did class work through Trinity and my thesis for Atlantic Coast. (Atlantic Coast Seminary is loosely affiliated with Trinity.)

WP: Why did it take 17 years? Were you a full-time pastor or working full-time?

Dana: I work at Microsoft. My first degrees were a Bachelor and then a Masters Degree in Computer Science. After that I decided I needed to invest more in my faith, so I began work on the Theology course. During that time we moved across the country twice—once from Colorado to Boston, then from Boston to Washington in 1998. Right after moving to Washington and getting settled into a new house, I found my birth family. I had grown up knowing I was adopted—now I was meeting sisters, cousins and a grandfather. In 1998 I was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

WP: What was your schedule like?

Dana: Well, I’m married, the father of 2 children that we were raising, who are now 25 and 22. For the online school I had to register for 4 courses at a time, and finish them in 2 years. My problem was getting them finished in the 2 year time period, so I had to repeat some courses.

WP: Did you have people who helped you?

Dana: My wife has been my chief editor on my papers, checking grammar. We’ve been married 29 years and we joke that I’ve been going to school since I was 5 years old.

There were also men at my church who read my work. One man in particular, Clayton Boyce, took 3 weeks to read my thesis and check my scriptural references, validate my Greek and so on.

WP: How did it feel to finally get the diploma into your hands?

Dana: It’s been almost a let-down, an anti-climax. Its like, “I’ve been doing this forever … now what?”
WP: What was the most important thing you learned from this besides getting the degree?

Dana: The nature of the assignments was much harder than I expected. The easiest assignment might have been “Write a 25 page essay on what you believe.” Everything we did, we had to back it up with scripture and show why we believed what we believed.

WP: So you might say you took an unofficial course in Apologetics as well. Did that strengthen your faith?

Have you ever felt like your prayers didn’t reach heaven? Have you doubted God’s ability to provide? Have you wondered why others seem to have responses, but not you?

Prepare to have your faith in God and prayer renewed! Ignited by an important answered prayer at age ten, Jeanette Sharp pursued a fervent prayer life that resulted in a firm faith and passion to help others to not give up on prayer. In Hurray God! Sharp compiles stories of people just like you who had answered prayers. People who doubted; people who complained; people who struggled with their faith, but all saw the answer in the end.

Read along and experience answered prayers about:

Job Loss

Anxiety

Relationships

Sickness

As you read these inspiring true stories, you too will say, “Hurray God!”
Then, on Thursday, April 26 Jeffrey will guest on The Matter At Hand radio show with host, Larry Weidman. The show airs on WGRC in Pennsylvania.

Show Times:

April 24: 3:20 p.m. ET

April 26: 11 a.m. ET

About Public Education

Anyone who watches the headlines knows that war rages in our nation. The liberal agenda to destroy America’s three cornerstones of exceptionalism and to transform our nation into a socialist country grows more blatant by the day. What many parents and educators fail to realize, however, is that this agenda has already gained ground in communities across the fruited plain through an avenue few would expect—our public school system.

In pushing your neighborhood toward socialism, the public school system:

• Attacks family values, Christianity, and American patriotism.
• Erodes America’s traditions and Christian foundation.
• Pushes the state religion and a spirit of governmental dependence.
• Encourages physical, moral, and intellectual weakness.
• Handicaps students from achieving their full potential.

Written by an educational insider, this eye-opening exposé, a must have for every concerned parent, describes the 235-year plan to hijack American democracy. It also reveals a destructive philosophy, based on Plato’s Republic, America must abandon to avert God’s judgment.

Bethany Jett was the winner of the “Writer of the Year” award at the Florida Christian Writers Conference, which was held earlier this month, March 1st through the 4th. In her story below you’ll see how the award was pivotal in helping Bethany realize her true calling. WinePress asked Bethany to describe her journey leading up to the award.
WP: How did you become interested in writing?

Bethany: I developed a love for books at an early age. My mom was always reading and writing so I had a natural inclination. I took Newspaper Journalism in high school and wrote for the Rave section of the Orlando Sentinel.

WP: I understand your mother won this award several years? Tell me a bit about her and how she has influenced you.

Bethany: My life motto is, “What would my mom say?”

My mom is seriously the best. I’ve watched her dream big and surpass her goals. She won Writer of the Year in 2009 and Best Novel in 2010. She also won the American Christian Fiction Writers’ Genesis Award for Historical Fiction in 2011.

I am so proud of how she has grown into a confident author. She is writing her third book now and I’ve only read the first 250 words but it’s amazing! Her name is Johnnie Donley and her website is www.JohnnieDonley.com.
WP: Have you attended FCW before and how often?

Bethany: This year was my first FCW but not my last! Thank you, Cec Murphy, for the scholarship!

WP: What is your grandest writing dream?

Bethany: Earning a living as a writer/speaker. I want to be the Beth Moore for teenage girls.

WP: Did you ever expect winning this award?

Bethany: Two hours before the awards ceremony, I called my mom and told her I was secretly hoping I would win the Non-Fiction award. I almost didn’t tell her because I didn’t want to say it out loud. You see, I told God that maybe if I won the Non-Fiction category, I could quit my job and pursue writing/speaking.

When I didn’t win non-fiction, I was disappointed, but I’d had such great feedback with my proposal that I was still floating.

I think I gasped when you called my name for Writer of the Year. In the same way that I didn’t want to say out loud my wish for the Non-Fiction award, I didn’t even dare to think about winning Writer of the Year.

I feel that God couldn’t be any more clear about His plan for me, so when I got home, I gave my notice at work and March 30th is my last day!

WP: What was the one thing—besides the award :o)—that you took away from FCW 2012? What lesson did you learn?

Bethany: Confidence. My husband and mom have been encouraging me to write for probably the last five years, but after receiving amazing feedback from publishers, magazine writers, and agents, I felt I finally had permission to pursue writing.

WP: What would you say to encourage other inspiring writers?

Bethany: Go to a conference, even if you don’t feel qualified to be there.

Before I arrived, I felt like the last person who belonged. Why? I started my proposal chapters two weeks before the conference, created my one-sheet and bio the night before and printed business cards from my home printer the morning of.

I was late arriving and in between classes and dinner, I had to take a quiz and write an essay for my college class the first night of conference because it was due that night.

I bombed a term paper and won Writer of the Year in the same weekend.

No matter how disorganized or overwhelmed you feel, if you love to write and you feel God has giving you a gift, then go to a conference. It has changed my life.

WP: I have one question—you ran out right away after you received the award. Did you call your mom?

Bethany: Yes! I sat down next to Clella Camp, a good friend of my mom’s, and I was shaking. She said, “You need to call your mother!” It was a little embarrassing walking out right away, but winning Writer of the Year was more than just an award for me—it’s following in my mom’s footsteps.

Want to know more about the girl behind the story? Bethany is now 29 years old and writes Young Adult non-fiction. She’s had a lot of experience to invest into her writing, as she details here:

With five years of what she terms “youth sponsor interning” under her belt by the age of 21, Bethany Jett knew working with teenagers was part of her purpose. She taught abstinence education (RESPECT) for three years in high school and has worked as a youth sponsor since she was 17. At the age of 21, she graduated from youth sponsor to youth minister’s wife when she married Justin.

She is her husband’s greatest asset in their church youth ministry, working specifically with middle school and high school girls. As a result, she mentors college-age girls after they leave youth group.

“My heart yearns to support, motivate, and encourage teen girls to grow to love their Savior with everything they have and more than anything that glitters and distracts.”

Bethany has been writing for teenagers since she was a teen herself. Not only was she a writer for her high school’s newspaper, she wrote articles for RAVE, a teen-section of the Orlando Sentinel.

Her website, EsthersBlessing.com, allows her to post advice to girls all over the country, and all over the world. She is currently blogging on dating, and recently won Writer of the Year at the Florida Christian Writers’ Conference.
She has been the guest speaker of the New Beginnings Christian Church Women’s Retreat 2011 and has spoken at various meetings for the past five years. She teaches small group Bible studies and is currently leading one with her husband.

Moreover, while finishing her Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in History, Bethany and her husband, Justin, are raising three small boys.
